Betty Wright, 'Tonight is the Night' Singer Has Died At Age 66

Betty Wright, a very talented R&B classic Singer-Songwriter and producer, died on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at her home in Miami.

She was 66.

The cause of Wright's death could be cancer as she was diagnosed with the disease last fall according to Steve Greenberg of S-Curve Records.

Wright is survived by her four children. Aisha McCray, Patrice Parker, and Asha Wright are her three daughters. While Chaka Azuri is her son. Betty Wright also had a son, Patrick Parker who was shot and killed on December 25, 2005, at the age of 21.

This is yet another huge loss for the music industry. 

Wright was really a very powerful singer who had a hit single when she was only 18. Her 1971 hit, 'Clean Up Woman' was on top 6 on the singles chart. And it is still her greatest song she sang.

Betty Wright gave many hits like,' Shoorah Shoorah', 'Let me be Your Lovemaker', 'Tonight is the Night' and 'Where is the Love.' 

Wright is also the first female artist who launched her own independent label in the 80s, the time when she recorded No Pain No Gain. 

Betty Wright has worked with many known celebrities like Stephen Stills, Alice Cooper, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Bob Marley, David Byrne, Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone, Mary J. Blige, and more. She was an inspiration to them.

Born as Bessie Regina Norris on December 21, 1953, Wright was the youngest of her seven siblings. Wright was a born singer as she started singing in, her siblings' gospel group, Echoes of Joy when she was just 2.

Betty Wright was married three times. Her husband, Noel Williams, popular as King Sporty is known for his and Bob Marley's song, 'Buffalo Soldier.'  Wright's famous Jamaican musician husband Sporty died on January 5, 2015, at the age of 71.

Her children's grief of losing mom on Mother's day is inconsolable.

This is a significant loss and we will miss you, Betty Wright.
